Many Parts
There is one body. But it has many parts. Even though it has many parts, they make up one body. It is the same with Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:12) This bible quote has been floating around in my head these past weeks because it's marching band season at our house. We are a marching band family. Four of our five children have participated in a marching band. So from mid-summer into November our lives revolve around all things band. Even parents get roped in, I've spent two or three evenings a week this past month helping get props ready for this years show. Playing my small 'part'.
I've stood at practices thinking about 1 Corinthians 12:12, watching 250 kids come together into one cohesive whole. Kids and adults sacrificing time and giving of their talents for a greater good. No matter what their role is they are important to the whole. They all have to rely on each other. When someone is missing they leave an obvious hole in their place in the show. "Yes!", I'm thinking, "a great example of the Body of Christ."
An example I'll be using a lot this year. My youngest, Anna, is a senior and will soon be playing in her last marching band show. In the wings stands my 8th grade granddaughter, Kayla, excited to take up the marching band mantle. More importantly, this is the year she says yes to her role in the Body of Christ. She'll be Confirmed in February. In her excitement of joining marching band, I have a living, breathing example to help her see how she is important to our church. By becoming part of Christ's mission she becomes more then she could ever be alone. Her value is found in giving of herself, being part of the Body of Christ. Hmmmmm, with all the changes going on in my life, these are thoughts I might need to visit again, for myself.
We all know halftime is the best part of a football game. Go Marching Firebirds!
